We Don’t Know How Much It Hurts

I don’t know how much you hurt.
You don’t know how much I hurt.
We don’t how much they hurt.

They don’t know how much we hurt,
But it’s not that hard to guess.
Once you’ve guessed how much it hurts,

Based on screams or groans or clenched
Eyes and balled-up fists, what’s next?
What’s next is based on that guess,

And there are times when that works
And times when that, too, just hurts.
We don’t know how much that hurts.
